Progressive Issue #1
The Issue

Planet Earth is in serious danger. Every living thing risks destruction by its own environment. Air, water, and soil are polluted. Each day, the damages grow worse. That's the truth revealed by fact-based science. Yet, most "leaders" of humankind—who could jump-start global solutions to the crisis—seem inept, asleep, and oblivious.

Actions Needed
  1. Save the Planet
    • Reverse global warming.
    • Save the world's rainforests.
    • Reclaim damaged land areas.

  2. Save Nature
    • Create regional green spaces.
    • Conserve national parks and refuges.
    • Protect all wildlife—especially endangered species.

  3. Stop Pollution
    • Stop dumping of toxins.
    • Reduce worldwide pollution.
    • Ensure clean air, water, & soil.

  4. Involve Everyone
    • Enforce local environmental laws strictly.
    • Teach all people to take "small green steps."
    • Educate politicians about science and ecology.

When Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize, he donated all his cash prize (around $750,000) to this organization. Gore helped create the Alliance in 2006 to fight global warming and other planetary threats. The Alliance's purpose is to convey how important, urgent, and feasible it is to adopt major, effective solutions to the climate crisis.  WHAT TO DO: Join. Find hidden climate solutions. Take small steps at home, work, and elsewhere. Get active in your community.

The BBC Wildlife Fund gives grants (with funds raised by donations) to support projects and programs to protect endangered wildlife and biodiversity (animals, plants and wild places they need to help protect and improve the natural habitats that wildlife and humans share).  WHAT TO DO: Donate.

The Nature Conservancy's mission is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. They apply a strategic, science-based planning process, called Conservation by Design.  WHAT TO DO: Donate. Join. Volunteer.

The Stop Global Warming Virtual March is a non-political effort which declares that "global warming is here now and it's time to act." The Stop Global Warming effort is a project of the Tides Center, which actively promotes change toward a healthy and just society founded on principles of social justice, broadly shared economic opportunity, a robust democratic process, and a sustainable environment. Tides believes healthy societies rely fundamentally on respect for human rights, the vitality of communities, and a celebration of diversity.  WHAT TO DO: Join. Take Action. Promote. Tell a Friend.

The World Land Trust (established 1989) is an international conservation organization which takes direct action to save rain forests and other biologically important lands. A major patron is renowned naturalist and film-maker, Sir David Attenborough. The Trust buys wilderness areas, acre by acre, which are then protected indefinitely as private reserves owned and managed by local organizations for the benefit of both wildlife and people.  WHAT TO DO: Support Conservation Projects. Donate. Buy wildlife Christmas cards. Spread the word.

WWF's mission is the conservation of nature. They work to preserve the diversity and abundance of life on Earth and the health of ecological systems by: (a) protecting natural areas and wild populations of plants and animals, including endangered species; (b) promoting sustainable approaches to the use of renewable natural resources; and, (c) promoting more efficient use of resources and energy and the maximum reduction of pollution. Quote: "We are committed to reversing the degradation of our planet's natural environment and to building a future in which human needs are met in harmony with nature. We recognize the critical relevance of human numbers, poverty, and consumption patterns to meeting these goals."  WHAT TO DO: Join. Donate. Support WWF's Conservation Action Network.
